What is a CFP® Professional?

A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® is a type of financial advisor. However, unlike other types of advisors, CFP® Professionals have met rigorous educational and experience requirements, passed the CFP® exam, and committed to the ethical standards set and monitored by the CFP Board. They are held to a fiduciary standard, meaning that they are obligated to act in their client’s best interest.

How to Become a CFP® Professional

The CFP® professional designation is the standard of excellence for financial planners. The CFP Board has specific requirements for becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®. If you are interested in becoming a CFP® professional, here is an overview of what you need to do. More comprehensive information is found on the CFP Board website.

CFP Board Requirements

EDUCATION

You must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in any discipline from an accredited college or university and you must complete financial planning coursework through a CFP Board registered program (like our Fast Track CFP® Certification Program).

You must complete the coursework before you can take the CFP® exam and have 5 years from the date you pass the CFP® exam to complete the education requirement.

PASS THE EXAM

Passing the CFP® exam demonstrates that you have an in-depth understanding of the six course areas and the fundamentals of providing financial planning advice. The exam is a 170-question, multiple-choice test that consists of two 3-hour sessions over one day. The exam includes stand-alone and scenario-based questions, as well as questions associated with case studies.

We offer a Live Review to help you PASS the exam. The condensed 35-hour review focuses on application, analysis, and case evaluation.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

The experience requirement prepares you to provide personal financial planning to the public without supervision. As a CFP® candidate, you must complete either 6,000 hours of professional experience related to financial planning or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship that meets additional requirements. These hours can be completed either within 10 years before taking the exam and/or within five years after passing it.

COMMITMENT TO OUR ETHICAL STANDARD

The final steps of becoming a CFP® professional are to sign the Ethics Declaration, in which you commit to acting as a fiduciary for your clients. You must also pass a background check conducted by the CFP Board.
